Renée Fleming and Dmitri Hvorostovsky Take Audiences on a Musical Odyssey in St Petersburg | Renee Fleming | News

Set to air on PBS’s Great Performances September 1 DVD available exclusively in the US from Decca September 7.

Acclaimed American soprano Renée Fleming travels to St Petersburg to join her friend, baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, for performances of opera and song in three palaces around the city. Between performances of works by Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Medtner, Renée Fleming guides the audience through St Petersburg to explore the rich cultural heritage of this “Venice of the North”. The program will air on PBS’s Great Performances series starting on September 1 and the Decca DVD (including additional bonus material) will be available exclusively in the US on September 7.

Soprano Renée Fleming, who was recently featured on CBS Sunday Morning, takes the audience to some of St Petersburg’s most famous monuments between musical numbers. Some highlights of the tour include the Winter Palace, Yusupov Palace, Alexander Nevsky Monastery Cemetery and more. These beautifully filmed segments highlight the opulence and beauty of St Petersburg.

While the travelogue allows the audience a rare glimpse of St Petersburg, the appeal of this DVD for opera fans will be the musical performances by Renée Fleming and Dmitri Hvorostovsky. For the opera excerpts the singers are joined by the State Hermitage Orchestra and conductor Constantine Orbelian. Together, Fleming and Hvorostovsky perform the Act 4 duet from Verdi’s Il Trovatore and the Recognition duet from Act 1 of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra. The program closes with their much-praised performance of the final duet from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin as filmed in the Gold Ballroom of the Peterhof Palace.

In addition to the duets, Renée Fleming sings songs by Rachmaninov while accompanied by pianist Olga Kern and performs Natasha’s aria from Tchaikovsky’s Oprichnik with the orchestra. Dmitri Hvorostovsky is accompanied by Ivari Ilja and sings songs by Tchaikovsky and Medtner along with Yeletzki’s aria from Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame.

As a special bonus, both singers offer additional arias on the DVD with selections from Hamlet, Norma, Nero, and Pique Dame. In addition to partnering with Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Renée Fleming has partnered with Vivienne Westwood who designed the singer’s day and evening wear for the program. This unique DVD offers a feast for both the eyes and ears as one is taken on a tour of historic and opulent St Petersburg while also enjoying from the front row a very special concert from two of the world’s most highly regarded opera singers today.

Available Now on your PLAY MPE Player

Violinist Julia Fischer’s recording of Paganini’s 24 Caprices will be released by Decca in the U.S. digitally on August 31 exclusively at iTunes with the recording available in full distribution on September 7. On the same day, Decca will also release a DVD of Ms. Fischer’s 2008 professional piano debut performing the Grieg Piano Concerto at a concert at which she also performed the Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3.

Ms. Fischer signed an exclusive recording contract with Decca in 2008 and her first album of Bach Concertos recorded with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields was released in January 2009 and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Chart. With this new recording, Ms. Fischer hopes to dispel the reputation of Paganini’s 24 Caprices as merely virtuosic showpieces: “The Caprices represent 24 moods – little musical ideas, each one different, each one appealing.”

Ms. Fischer, now 27, first heard the 24 Caprices when she was eight-years-old at a children’s music course at which Austrian violinist Thomas Zehetmair performed: “I thought, these are the most difficult things a violinist can play. When I was 10, I learnt my first Caprice – number 17 – and I felt like I was a real, true violinist.”

Ms. Fischer, internationally renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven and Bach, attributes her discovery of Robert Schumann’s transcription of the sixth piece, the ‘Trill Caprice’, to her desire to seriously study Paganini and ultimately to record the Caprices: “Unlike many critics and biographers, Schumann did not perceive this man as a ‘Devil’s Fiddler’ or a circus act. He recognized the musical power of these 24 miniatures, and what a musical poem he made out of it (the Caprice No. 6).”

To prepare for the recording, made at Munich’s August Everding Hall, Ms. Fischer says she put down her violin and set aside any thought of the technical challenges the pieces present: “I looked at the score and the musical background of the pieces, completely forgetting the technical challenges. After making a musical idea in my head, I then tried to make them work.”

In seeking to unlock the meaning and emotion of each piece, she deliberated over bowings, over phrasing, over figurations and, contrary to her usual practice, did not insist on following exactly what was written in the score. For example, she recorded Caprice No. 6 with a mute and without, even though there is no indication in the score of a mute: “The one with mute clearly sounded better and more logical. Why shouldn’t a composer who spent his whole life exhaustively exploring the possibilities of violin playing, who thought up mixed bowings and left-hand pizzicato, not also have used a mute?”

Ms. Fischer says Paganini’s contribution to music extends far beyond the violin: “I think that we really forget that most of the music of the 19th century we would not have without Nicolai Paganini.”

SAINT-SAËNS VIOLIN CONCERTO NO. 3 & GREIG’S PIANO CONCERTO

Click
here to learn more and watch video from this DVD

While Ms. Fischer is recognized worldwide as a violinist who possesses a talent of uncommon ability and is an exceptionally gifted performer, reflected in the numerous awards and effusive reviews she has received for both her live performances and recordings, she is also a talented pianist. On January 1st, 2008 she made her professional piano debut at the Alte Oper Frankfurt performing the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and conductor Matthias Pintscher. On the same program, she performed the Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3. A DVD of this concert will be released by Decca on September 7.

In his review of this concert Arno Widmann of the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper described the atmosphere in the concert hall: “The excitement of the audience was palpable. After all, everyone was aware that only two extremes were possible: either this would turn out to be the total disgrace of one of the greatest living violinists; or it would mark the triumphant birth of a new pianist. From the beginning of the Adagio of the Grieg piano concerto, everyone present knew they were witnessing the overwhelming triumph of Julia Fischer.”

In an interview with Gramophone magazine last year Ms. Fischer said that she always studies repertoire on both instruments: “I really feel that that sort of dual sensibility raises my expectations of myself both as a violinist and as a pianist. It’s much harder to achieve the sense of polyphonic playing on a violin than on a piano, for example, and it’s much easier to play melodically on a violin than on the piano. So when I play one instrument or the other, I’m always coming to it from these two very different perspectives.”

The DVD includes an extended interview with Ms. Fischer titled “Two Musical Worlds” that has previously aired on German television.

Deutsche Grammophon Signs Guitar Virtuoso Miloš Karadaglic | Miloš Karadaglic | News

Deutsche Grammophon is delighted to announce the signing of an exclusive recording-agreement with guitar virtuoso Miloš Karadaglic.

This young classical guitarist is preparing his début album for release in spring 2011.

Michael Lang, President, Deutsche Grammophon, said, "We're thrilled to work with Miloš — he's a terrific talent, an engaging personality — and we know the time is now to re-establish the classical guitar in the world of music. Miloš is the one."

The début album by Miloš will pay tribute to the guitarist’s own Mediterranean roots. Featuring music from his Montenegro homeland and from the Balkans and Spain, and by composers such as Granados, Domeniconi and Albéniz, the recording will explore the Euro-Arabian world that his instrument has come from.

Born in Montenegro in 1983, Miloš has already established himself as one of today’s most gifted guitar virtuosos. He began playing the guitar at the age of eight, and quickly won national recognition for his performances. At sixteen, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music where, after graduating with First Class Honors, he went on to complete a Masters degree in Performance.

Miloš said of his signing: "Deutsche Grammophon is a home to many of my musical idols. When I was a child, I remember listening to the great guitarist, Andrés Segovia, and dreaming that one day I, too, might have such a career. Now it is becoming a reality and my dreams are being fulfilled more quickly than I could possibly have imagined. I am honored and excited to begin my collaboration with this fantastic label and hope, through my playing, that I will bring the guitar to a new generation of listeners."

iTunes Festival: London 2010

This past July, Miloš participated in the London-wide iTunes Festival by giving a short concert.
Vladimir Ashkenazy Records Bach's 6 Partitas for the First Time | Vladimir Ashkenazy | News

Piano Legend Vladimir Ashkenazy Releases His First Recording of Bach’s 6 Partitas, Available from Decca on August 10, 2010

"Vladimir Ashkenazy is one of the great pianists of modern times, with a legacy of landmark solo and concerto recordings to challenge anybody's" – The Daily Telegraph

Vladimir Ashkenazy has been an exclusive recording artist with Decca since 1963, and in all his 200 albums as pianist or conductor he has never recorded Bach's monumental 6 Partitas (BWV 825-830). The "undisputed legend" (Time Out) brings a lifetime of musical discernment to these immense pieces, available from Decca on August 10, 2010.

Published under the general title of Clavier-Übung (Keyboard Practice), the 6 Partitas were immediately popular and quickly became core repertoire for all keyboard players. Each partita, or suite of dance movements, is unique in form and originality, and combines the engaging qualities of grace, playfulness and nobility.

These were the last set of suites for solo keyboard that Bach composed (though the first to be published) and are the most technically challenging. Brilliantly conceived with innumerable musical details to amuse and fascinate the most intellectual of listeners, these 6 partitas are also immensely charming and endlessly enjoyable to hear without focusing on the techniques being used by Bach.

Vladimir Ashkenazy brings a unique perspective to these works on this CD, his first recording of these particular pieces. Since winning second prize in the 1955 International Chopin Competition, Ashkenazy has spent the last 55 years impressing audiences from the piano and increasingly from the conductor’s podium. This musical duality influences his work as a pianist and as a conductor by enriching each with a cross-pollination of perspective. This all-new recording, following the acclaimed 2006 release of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I, is a summit meeting of masters finding both Bach and Ashkenazy at the heights of their individual powers.

"Though he has never been regarded as a Bach pianist, Vladimir Ashkenazy's set of the 48 Preludes and Fugues merits a place alongside the finest versions of this much-recorded cycle" – The Guardian

French Soprano Patricia Petibon Records Rosso: Italian Baroque Arias for Deutsche Grammophon | Patricia Petibon | News

The Soprano’s Second Recital for the Yellow Label Will be Available August 3, 2010

Many notable vocalists have turned their attention to Italian Baroque music in the last few years resulting in a vast supply of recordings to choose from. Yet, in this abundance of riches soprano Patricia Petibon stands out as the rare artist who combines a uniquely beguiling and agile voice with the dramatic instincts of a true actress. Rosso, her second recital album for Deutsche Grammophon, is a dramatic tour of late 17th and early 18th century Italian vocal music.

The period of music covered in the present recital produced some of the most remarkable and memorable arias ever written. Whether testing the limits of virtuoso technique or singing long melodies in one endless breath, these arias expose the very nature and limits of a singer’s voice. Patricia Petibon has easily mastered the technique required and has freed herself to focus on the dramatic elements of each aria. With selections by Handel, Scarlatti, Porpora, Stradella, Sartorio, Vivaldi and Marcello, Ms. Petibon covers a number of individual styles within this period of music.

While focused on conveying the text as well as the emotional content for each aria, Ms. Petibon displays her rare gift of being able to act through the voice. Throughout the fourteen selections on this recital, Ms. Petibon summons to vivid life a wealth of characters tangled up in the power plays of gods, kings, witches and devils. In a recent profile, Opera News observed: “Her voice is certainly suited to Baroque music; though it is striking, beautiful and unusually versatile, its strength is its sensitivity, rather than its size … But it's clear that she has no intention of allowing Fach stereotypes to hold her back: her artistry is all about breaking the mold.”

Ms. Petibon is joined by the vibrant Venice Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Andrea Marcon. A regular presence on the Deutsche Grammophon label, the Venice Baroque Orchestra has garnered universal praise for their fearless style and thrilling performances. According to NPR, “Today, the group is recognized as one of the world’s most adventurous and dramatic period-instrument ensembles.” Having worked with such artists as Giuliano Carmignola, Magdalena Kožená, Viktoria Mullova, Simone Kermes and others, the ensemble also performs numerous concerts devoted to music of the Italian Baroque.
